With the fixture schedule decimated by overnight rain, the heavy pitch hampered both sides in what proved to be a scrappy first half.
Harlow’s talismanic striker Alex Read, in a rich vein of form, twice beat the goalkeeper to set up a crucial three points for the visitors. Waltham Abbey squandered an opportunity to get back into the game from the penalty spot, allowing the Hawks to take the bragging rights over local rivals Waltham Abbey.
Neither goalkeeper had much to do in the first half, but when called upon they were equal to the attackers’ efforts. Mario Noto forced Waltham Abbey stopper Aaron Omand into a good save from a free kick, before Ryan Blackman's free kick was saved well by Harlow custodian David Hughes.

With the pitch drying out all the time, Harlow were able to lift their game in the second period. Alex Read put the visitors ahead when he latched onto a through-ball, and despite Omand saving the first effort, Read finished at the second time of asking.
Alex Read was on the scoresheet again in the 70th minute, when he rounded the goalkeeper to tap into an empty net.
Late in the game, the Hawks could have been in for a nervy finish after Ibrahima Sonko fouled Christian Assombalonga in the box. Assombalonga, who had half-chances earlier on to get on the scoresheet, managed to send the ball well over the bar.
