Extra-Time Harlow Heartbreak In The FA Cup

Extra-Time Harlow Heartbreak In The FA Cup

Logan Young22 Aug - 10:30

Full-Time: Woodford Town 3-2 Harlow Town (AET)

It was heartbreak for the Hawks as we travelled to Woodford for an FA Cup Replay on Wednesday night, following on from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the side, in which the Hawks were moments from progressing, but a late penalty given away by Teddy Jones forced the replay.

This was a similar affair in that neither side could really be separated for the majority of the game, but it was Woodford who snatched the game from the hands of Harlow at the death.

Protic had the first real chance of the game in which he headed just wide for Woodford. Down the other end, Gavin Cockman put it in the net but was ruled to be offside.

Harlow Town missed a few chances as Denzel Effah shot wide with an effort that looked neither a shot or cross, and James Love missed by a narrow margin with a headed effort from a corner.

That was pretty much it for the first-half, which was a very quiet affair with few chances.

Kebi looked to cause danger for James Pellin early in the second half, opting to shoot for Woodford from distance. The shot was dipping but inches over the bar.

The Hawks supporters were in full-force throughout the game as Harlow looked to stamp down their authority, but it was the home side who netted first.

Freshly off the bench, Dimitri Christou picked up a loose ball and hit a half-volley into the bottom-left corner beyond the reach of James Pellin as the Hawks were momentarily silenced and the bang of the Woodford drums was present more than ever.

Pellin had to make another save from a back-post header before Harlow tried to turn the tides, supporters still on their side. Arley Barker hit a shot from outside the box which went just wide.

It was elation for the away supporters as Joe Dearman reached onto a ball down the left, whipping it towards the back-post where Gavin Cockman was lurking. Cockman made no mistake in unleashing a low effort which took a deflection but found the back of the net, equalising the game for Harlow.

Like the flick of a switch, the momentum had completely shifted, Harlow were pushing forward and this was reflected by Callum Ibe sprinting through on goal. The Woodford defender had fallen, he was one-on-one with Agboola, but he was unable to finish. A huge chance went amiss.

End-to-end action continued until in the 84th minute, Woodford regained their lead after Dimitri Christou struck one again which struck Fabion Simms and was redirected into the back of the Harlow Town net. The Harlow hard-work had seemingly been crushed by the late goal.

Despite this setback, Harlow were not finished yet. With a stroke of magic, James Love hit a ball forward towards Joe Dearman on the left-hand side. Joe produced an ice cold finish past Agboola and the ground erupted with Harlow support. Harlow had equalised in the 89th minute. Could they find a late winner? They did push for one but the referee’s whistle called time on a hectic end to the game. Extra-time was in order.

At this stage, Dwade James had been introduced and he was found over the top but Agboola came out on top.

It looked as though Woodford would win it when Myles John hit a pounding volley from close-range which flew into the crossbar and hit another Woodford player. The ball bounced back towards James Pellin who somehow managed to get hold of it under immense pressure.

Penalties looked to be on the way but in the 117th minute, Woodford whipped a cross into the box and Alex Kozak stood unmarked in the penalty area, heading home for Woodford as celebrations erupted.

Harlow Town were unable to recover from this final yellow blow, despite loading the box. The time had run out. They fought hard, but after a 210 minute-long FA Cup tie, it would be Woodford Town ultimately progressing into the First Qualifying Round to face Newmarket.

We thank you for your continued support and hope to see you at our next game on Tuesday evening, as we face Stanway Pegasus in the Essex Senior Cup for the first time since we faced them in the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup last season.
