Hawks On Fire Against Dunstable Town

Hawks On Fire Against Dunstable Town

Logan Young15 Oct - 16:20

Full Time: Dunstable Town 0-6 Harlow Town

After 7 games without a league victory, the Hawks finally grabbed three points with an electric performance away at Dunstable Town.

The reds made the journey just past Luton last night and got their revenge on the blues after they came to The Harlow Arena in August and took all three points with a 94th minute winner.

Since then, Dunstable Town have struggled and their side has changed considerably. They had just two league victories ahead of the game last night.

It was an end-to-end start to the game, with Dunstable registering the first proper chance of the game as James Pellin was forced to make a very good save with his foot. The shot came at him from barely 6 yards out.

Down the other end, Harlow almost took an early lead as Stef Georgiou robbed the Dunstable defender of possession before squaring it across the penalty area for Denzel Effah who had his shot blocked.

Mitch Hahn was forced off early through injury and was replaced by Raheem Gray. Minutes after, Harlow broke the deadlock as Ishaq Ameen did excellently well to beat a man and thread through a ball to Stef Georgiou, who slid it past George Rose at his near-post, making it 0-1 to Harlow.

It wasn’t long before the second goal arrived as Louis Stead hit a free-kick from 20 yards out into the wall before lofting a pass towards the front-post, where Stef Georgiou was making a run and smashed it past Rose at the near-post once again. For the first time in a long time, Harlow were comfortably winning early in the first half.

Things got even better for Danny Chapman’s side as Arley Barker played a good ball over-the-top, finding the run of Ishaq Ameen who took a touch and then smashed it past Rose, grabbing his first goal since returning to Harlow earlier this month.

Syrus Gordon came close with a half-volley from the edge of the box, picking up the pieces from a Dunstable clearance but it dragged wide of the left post.

To top off what had been a superb first-half for the Hawks, Ishaq Ameen came agonisingly close to making it 0-4 to Harlow, with his left-footed effort bouncing inches wide of the right-post.

At half-time, things looked very positive for Harlow. Supporters were uplifted and that improvement in general mood had no doubt rubbed-off on the players, who were playing with smiles on their faces, a welcome sight.

Dunstable started the second half in a lively manner, similarly to how they started the first-half. James Pellin made a couple of saves, ones that you would expect him to have made, as Harlow looked to find their feet a bit in the game.

In the past, we’ve seen the Hawks take their foot off the pedal slightly when winning comfortably at the break. However, last night they did quite the opposite and did go on to more than find their feet.

Harlow began knocking on the door as Denzel Effah made a good run down the right-hand side before playing it across to a sprinting Stef Georgiou, who slid it at George Rose.

The fourth goal of the game arrived after Stef Georgiou ran excellently down the right-hand side before unselfishly squaring it across to Denzel Effah who finished with panache.

Around ten minutes later, Denzel Effah was fouled in the box, winning a penalty and then scoring it, sending the keeper the wrong way and smashing it into the right-hand side of the goal.

The cherry on top of the cake was Raheem Gray scoring at the end after Denzel Effah threaded it through to him and he passed it beyond George Rose. The goal, as do all his goals, meant a lot to him; the celebration said it all.

Overall, it was an emphatic and ruthless performance from Danny Chapman’s side, something that we haven’t seen too often this season, but it felt as though a spark had been re-ignited within the team and as Assistant Manager Scott Curley proclaimed after the game, “we had a bit of belief about us.”

I personally agree with him. We saw some great link-up between Stef Georgiou, who deservedly won Player Of The Match, Ishaq Ameen, Denzel Effah and Raheem Gray going forward. As well as this, the midfield never backed down from a challenge and the defence worked well as a unit. James Pellin did everything he needed to do, so overall it was a very solid team performance.

We thank you all for your fantastic travelling support and we hope to see you this Saturday as we host Potton United in the league and look to continue where we left off.
